The blast occurred at an office building at around 1.25pm local time (9.25pm BST).

The Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) said the explosion occurred on the first floor.

The fire service initially said a vehicle may have crashed into the side of the building, but authorities later said this may not have been the case.

An Orange County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman said: “We’re trying to determine if a vehicle was involved or if it was an accident or inside the building.”

Emergency services have closed the westbound carriageway of Pacific Drive. The westbound lanes are partly shut to the Aliso Plaza.
