Chelsea transfer news: Blues are lining up a deal for Filip Benkovic

Chelsea are yet to confirm Antonio Conte’s departure despite having Maurizio Sarri lined up to be boss for next season.

But the club are interested in signing Croatia Under-21 star Benkovic.

The Dinamo Zagreb defender will cost around £25m and could be the club’s first new arrival this summer.

Chelsea’s managerial situation has meant transfers have stalled with a number of current players still unsure of their position.

Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois could leave while Alvaro Morata has also been linked with a departure.

Chelsea are expected to sell David Luiz and will need more options at the back.

Sarri has been eyeing a move for Daniele Rugani but his agent stressed the manager needs to be in place before a deal can happen.

“It is obvious to say that the Sarri question must first be resolved, then proceed with the negotiations and make them more or less concrete,” he told Sportitalia, as reported by Tuttojuve.com.

But Benkovic, 20, has emerged as a target after impressing in Croatia last season.

The 6ft 4” defender has been in the first team for three seasons and has made over 50 appearances.

Celtic were interested in a move last summer, while Borrusia Dortmund and West Ham have been monitoring him this term.

Reports in Italy also claim AC Milan have been offered him.
