Deadpool was a surprise success when Ryan Reynolds successfully introduced the world to the concept of an R-rated, laugh-out-loud comic book movie.

Now that Deadpool 2 is set to enjoy similar success, will there be a Deadpool 3?

Reynolds himself may have downplayed such speculation, but screenwriter Rhett Reese has revealed that discussions should happen at some point in the near future.

"We’ll absolutely be talking about Deadpool 3 at some point,” he said, according to IGN.

Deadpool 2 has had good reviews from critics

“It’ll likely come after X-Force, so it’s gonna be - the can’s gonna be kicked down the road a little bit.

"But I can’t believe we won’t at least talk about it at some point, once Ryan’s had a chance to put down the suit for a few months, and we’ve had a chance to clear our heads.

“Because, I just think, you know, the Iron Man model is probably a good one. So, you get the first two, then you get an ensemble, and then maybe an Iron Man 3, a Deadpool 3, and then maybe another ensemble.

“So, that’s a rough idea, but that may be how it plays out."

The film will dethrone Avengers: Infinity War at the box office

For his part, Reynolds has said to Entertainment Weekly: “I don’t know that there would be a Deadpool 3. I really don’t.

“I feel like the character, in order for him to function properly within his own universe, you need to take everything away from him. I don’t think that you can keep doing that.

"I do see him as being a part of X-Force, obviously. I would love to see him in a team-up sort of thing, like a mano a mano or a great female character from the X-Men universe."

Reynolds has appeared resistant to the idea of a third movie

Deadpool 2 has an 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes and should dethrone Avengers: Infinity War at the box office this weekend.

It also stars Josh Brolin, who explained earlier this week that he was on the verge of turning the role of Cable down.
