Emmerdale fans will know that Sandy Thomas (who is played by Freddie Jones) is set to leave the village very soon.

However, leading up to his exit he reconsiders leaving with newcomer Maisie (Wendy Craig) to Australia.

In a sneak peek clip for Friday night’s instalment of the hit ITV soap, Laurel (Charlotte Bellamy) and Arthur (Alfie Clarke) arrive home to find Sandy with tears in his eyes.

Prior to their arrival, the grandfather had been looking at a family photo taken with his dead son Ashley.

But when the two walk in, Sandy quickly proceeds to wipe tears from his eyes in a bid to hide his emotions.

Despite his efforts to conceal his feeling, Laurel points out that they have just seen Maisie and she is also upset about him not coming with her to Australia.

A concerned Laurel turns to him and says: “Sandy we’ve just seen Maisie and she is as upset as you are.”

Snapping at her, Sandy barks: “Upset! I’ve had something in this eye all morning.”

“Like a big fat tear,” Laurel replies. “Because you know you’re making the biggest mistake of your life.

“And at your time of life, you can’t afford to. You know I’m worried that you’re going to regret it and you won’t have a chance to fix it.”

Waving his hands up in frustration, Sandy shouts: “And throw caution to the wind?”

“You can throw some clothes in a suitcase at the same time because that plane isn’t going to wait for you. What’s stopping you?” asks Laurel.

Begging, Laurel continues: “Please, Sandy you’ve got a real shot at happiness here and we love you and we’ll miss you but we want you to grab onto this with both hands.

Holding the family picture up in front of him, she adds: “Ask yourself, what would Ashley say?”

On Monday night’s show, viewers saw Sandy meet new village visitor Maisie for the first time when she gets off her tour bus.

Throughout this week, he will develop a relationship with Maisie after the pair are swept up in a holiday romance.

Emmerdale continues tonight at 7pm on ITV.
