Adam Lallana is on England's standby list for the 2018 World Cup

Lallana missed out on a place in England’s 23-man squad after it was announced yesterday, but he is on the standby list should anyone suffer an injury.

The 30-year-old had established himself as a key member of the Three Lions set-up in recent years and was named England’s Player of the Year for 2016.

But this season the former Southampton man has been beset by injury issues which has seen him start just one Premier League game all season.

He did come off the bench in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Brighton on the final day of the season.

However, his fitness remains a worry for England heading into the World Cup in Russia this summer.

Southgate rates Lallana highly and insists if it was any other player, his recent bout of injuries would almost certainly even rule him out of the standby list.

“I’ve had continual dialogue with Adam throughout the season because it’s been a really frustrating season for him,” Southgate said.

“Under normal circumstances, given the amount of football he has played, he wouldn’t be anywhere near the squad or the stand-by list.

“But he’s a player and a person we have a hell of a lot of time for.

“Maybe giving him another 10 days, who knows what happens. He maybe has a big impact in the Champions League final and we have an issue and he can be part of what we want to do.

“The reality of the conversations I’ve had with him are that to find the level of performance off the back of the limited minutes he’s had it’s going to be very difficult.

“History tells us you don’t tend to find your level of fitness and rhythm within a major tournament but i’d like to give him the best opportunity to do that.

“He completely understands that and I’ve had a long conversation with Jurgen about that who also thinks that’s the best route to go.”
