Brexit news: German MEP urges EU Commission to stop Brexit and give into immigration control demands
“For me, it is so obvious that this is a disaster. Here are two trains running at full speed on the same track against each other.
“And therefore we must stop this. I have not met a single non-British person, not one, who thinks it is a good idea that Britain leaves.
“I think it’s necessary for the European Commission and the European Council by themselves to take an initiative.
We cannot tell the British what to do but we can ask Brussels to come up with another offer
“And that’s exactly what we have done, we have formed an initiative called New Deal for Britain which is aimed at Brussels not at London.
“We cannot tell the British what to do, but I think we can do one thing, we can ask Brussels to come up with another offer which finally helps not only the Remainers in Britain, but also gives the Brexiteers in Britain what they always wanted.
“For instance more autonomy on immigration. That’s exactly the basis of our proposal.
“Give Britain more autonomy and perhaps give them an opportunity to reverse this terrible decision.”
Last week, EU Chief negotiator Michel Barnier sent a stern warning to the UK claiming border checks in Ireland would be inevitable if the UK decided to leave the customs union.
The warning followed Prime Minister Theresa May’s vow to “categorically” leave the customs union.
Mr Barnier also threatened the UK of calling off the transition period starting from March 2019 to help the UK Government implement new domestic laws and regulations.
