Women currently live longer than men in the UK, according to the Office for National Statistics.

While men can expect to live for a healthy 79.2 years, women on average live for almost four years longer, to 82.9 years.

However, your chances of living for this long may be reduced if you don’t exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight and have a good diet.

Smoking, drinking too much alcohol and regularly eating certain unhealthy foods could all also impact your life expectancy.

One way you could live longer is to munch some bananas, says Dr Sarah Brewer and Juliette Kellow in their new book, Eat Better Live Longer.

Perhaps most importantly, the yellow fruits could also protect against kidney cancer, the UK’s seventh most common type of this condition.

“Whether you like your bananas slightly green or freckly, they all come with triple levels of mood-boosting powers,” they write.

The UK’s most popular fruit is stuffed with carbohydrates, amino acids, potassium and fibre, which can all increase your lifespan.

Mentioned in the book, a study found that guzzling at least four of the traditional monkey morsels a year may cut your risk of developing this condition by 50 per cent.

A separate study that followed Swedish women for 13 years showed that eating fruits was associated with a reduced risk of developing cancer, but that bananas “offer the best protection”.

The curved fruits could also help you live longer by reducing blood pressure.

Increasing your potassium intake, of which bananas are a major source, while decreasing your salt intake helps the kidneys function normally, keeping your blood pressure at a healthy level.

This could increase your lifespan as high blood pressure is associated with several dangerous diseases including stroke and heart disease. The World Health Organisation says that it causes as much as 51 per cent of deaths from stroke.

The fibre content of bananas can also help you live longer through assisting with weight management.

It slows energy release from carbohydrates, helping you feel fuller for longer. This makes you less likely to snack and possibly gain weight, which is a risk factor for many dangerous conditions including fatty liver disease and some types of cancer.

You should also try making other changes to improve your lifespan, including regular exercise and avoiding overeating.

The NHS says that eating a healthy, balanced diet can reduce your risk of an early death.

Medical Website Health recommends that you should avoid overeating if you want your life expectancy to hit triple figures.

“If you want to live to 100, leaving a little bit of food on your plate may be a good idea,” it said.

“Author Dan Buttoner, who studies longevity around the world, found that the oldest Japanese people stop eating when they are feeling only about 80 per cent full.”
