Transport for London, which is overseen by the Mayor of London, will shut down much of the District and Circle lines on the Tube tomorrow and on Sunday, on one of its busiest days of the year.

Parts of the Bakerloo Line along with a considerable stretch of the London Overground will also be closed on Sunday, TfL confirmed on Friday.

Rail services are set to face severe strain, with the royal wedding taking place just outside the capital in Windsor and the FA Cup final at Wembley, north west London, later in the afternoon.

Tory MP Steve Double, who sits on the Commons transport committee, said: “This is one of the biggest days in London with the FA Cup and the Royal Wedding. Clearly tens of thousands of people will be wanting to come to London.

It is very short-sighted of the mayor to allow these engineering works to take place

“It is very short-sighted of the mayor to allow these engineering works to take place.

“They should have planned for this weeks ago. I hope Mr Khan makes the right decision and lifts them at this late stage.”

Mr Khan suggested he could cancel the proposed engineering works after warnings they could cause major disruption.

But a TfL source told Express.co.uk on Friday the closures are going ahead as planned.

The Circle Line will be closed between Aldgate and Edgware Road via Victoria tomorrow, which will make it more difficult for people travelling to Windsor to get to Paddington station.

The entire District Line west of South Kensington will be shut on every branch, and parts of the Jubilee Line will not be operating.

There will also be no Southern Rail services between Clapham Junction and Milton Keynes Central, which passes through Wembley Central on May 19, after Network Rail chose to carry out planned engineering works over the weekend.

Although the plans for engineering works have now been cancelled, Southern Rail admitted there was not enough time for it to staff its usual services.

A member of the Southern Rail team said on Twitter: “I have been informed that due to the lateness of the decision to cancel the works it is not possible for us to adjust the crew plans and run services on this route at the weekend.

“It does appear the info on the website is incorrect and we will update.”

Road closure charges have been scrapped by many councils to make way for wedding street parties, while the BBC has waived its license fee to let communities enjoy watching the ceremony together.

Caroline Pidgeon, a Liberal Democrat member of the London Assembly, said: “We should be celebrating that London is open this weekend. Sadly that is not the message that TfL and Network Rail are sending out.”
