Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho may give up on Real Madrid star Gareth Bale

Manchester United remain in the mix to sign Bale from Real Madrid at the end of the season.

The Wales international looks increasingly likely to leave the Bernabeu having struggled for game time so far this term.

Manchester United’s interest in the 28-year-old dates back to Bale’s time as a youngster in the Southampton youth academy.

Yet the Manchester Evening News say the Red Devils may finally give up on the Real Madrid superstar.

And that is supposedly because of Chong’s development.

The 18-year-old is highly rated at Old Trafford having blossomed for the club’s youth teams.

Chong trained with the United first team in March and reportedly made a big impression.

His pace and trickery, coupled with his eye for goal, has drawn inevitable comparisons with Ryan Giggs.

And, so highly does Jose Mourinho regard Chong, he may even shelve plans to sign Bale.

The MEN say there could be a spot for the Dutchman further down the line amid doubts over Juan Mata’s long-term future.

However, speaking recently, Chong expressed a desire to stay grounded.

"That's the most important thing," he said.

"As I've said, I'm just enjoying football at the moment and I will keep working hard and take it from there.

"I want to keep playing games, hopefully I'll keep getting them in the Under-23s and the Under-18s are doing well, top of the table, so, if they need me as well for whenever, I'll be there as well.

“Everyone at the club will help me. It's just how the club is built. Having my family around as well makes it a lot easier.

"Character is important and I've just got to keep working hard and doing my job. I'll take it game by game."
