Pokemon GO Articuno Day: Shiny news, Start Time, Raid event, best counters guide

Last weekend Pokemon GO trainers managed to unlock a very special treat: Articuno Day.

To cut a long story short, Trainers across the world had to complete a very particular set of goals as part of the first Safari Zone Global challenge whilst the event for Pokemon GO Dortmund was underway.

In completing these challenges, trainers were able to unlock a series of bonuses including bonus XP and longer lasting lucky eggs. But as soon as all four global zones completed their respective challenge, it unlocked Articuno Day.

Articuno Day is essentially Nianctic’s way of refreshing the pool of raid bosses in the game. Now, you might already have an Articuno, so it might not feel all that special.

But what if we told you that you will be able to encounter a Shiny Articuno! Yup, now we’re talking.

All of this takes place later today, on Saturday, July 7th, and like your standard community day event, you’ve only got a limited amount of time to make the most of this opportunity.

So, unfortunately, you’ve only got three hours to actually capture the elusive Pokemon. But thankfully, Articuno Day will give you five free Raid Passes to get you started.

For everything you need to know, including when the event starts, the best way to counter Articuno and much more, keep reading.

WHEN IS ARTICUNO DAY TAKING PLACE?

Well as we mentioned, it’s all kicked off today, Saturday, July 7th, but it’s not all day. You’ll have a very specific 3 hour window to make the most of this opportunity.

Incidentally, you can only hold one free raid pass at a time. But you will be able to pick up a total of 5 for free across the whole 3-hour window.

So here are the global times for when the event gets started.

Asia-Pacific region: 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. JST (GMT +9)

Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and India: 9:00 a.m.to 12:00 p.m. UTC (GMT +0)

The Americas and Greenland: 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. PT (GMT -8)

WHAT ARE MY CHANCES OF GETTING A SHINY

So not all Articuno you face in raids will be shiny. Like any shiny, it’s simply a case of pot luck when you encounter it.

It’s not currently clear either if the Shiny will be distinguishable on the Raid stop, or, if it will only be revealed as shiny after you’ve battled it and gone to the capture screen.

Either way, you’re probably going to need to battle and capture quite a few. That’s because the Silph Road estimate that shiny rates for Raid Bosses are roughly 1/19.

Like we said, that’s a lot of Articuno raid boss encounters. So you might have more luck if you head to a park or somewhere with a LOT of gyms to improve your chances.

Trainers playing in rural areas. We’re sorry but we doubt you’ll have that much luck unless Niantic raise Shiny encounters in rural areas.

The good news at least is that Niantic have also confirmed that Articuno will be the only legendary spawning from tier 5 raids during the 3 hour window.

So you need not worry about any eggs turning into Regice. Happy days!

BEST ARTICUNO COUNTERS

Articuno is an ICE and FLYING type Pokemon, with 37603 Boss CP. Now, the best way to counter Articuno has changed, slightly, since the raid boss first became available so many months ago.

However, the general rule of thumb is still very much unchanged.

Articuno is double weak against ROCK Pokemon and as such the best way to counter it is with a Tyranitar with the moves Smack Down and Stone Edge.

According to Pokemon GO Hub, you can, in theory, trio Articuno with six level 25 Smack Down / Stone Edge Tyranitars. If that’s not an option you can also use Golems and Omastars with double ROCK moves as well.

Looking even further into your deck of available Pokemon, you can also turn to the likes of fellow Legendary Entei and several more Fire / Electric / Steel type pokemon like Moltres, Raikou and more.

That being said, these are all second options to available ROCK Pokemon who will certainly perform the best.
