Saudi Arabia wants nukes if Iran gets them

As fears of a Middle Eastern nuclear arms race grew the Saudi politician vowed to match any Iranian military development including assembling a nuclear arsenal.

Adel Al-Jubeir, the Saudi Foreign Minister, said: “If Iran acquires nuclear capability we will do everything we can to do the same.”

Speaking after Iranian forces in Syria fired missiles into the disputed Golan Heights he said: “These missiles in Yemen are Iranian manufactured and delivered to the Huthis.

“Such behaviour is unacceptable. It violates UN Resolutions with regards to ballistic missiles – and the Iranians must be held accountable for this.

“We will find the right way and at the right time to respond to this.

“We are trying to avoid at all costs direct military action with Iran, but Iran’s behaviour such as this cannot continue.

“This amounts to a declaration of war.”

Tensions have been growing for some time between Saudi Arabia and other powers in the region.

The Saudi remarks come just days after Donald Trump pulled out of the Iran Nuclear Deal and opened the door to further nuclear capability development in Tehran.

Mr Trump’s cavalier approach to foreign affairs has angered and worried allies, and now the Saudis are keen to ensure that their geopolitical ties are unaffected by the fallout.

In Britain, Boris Johnson restated Britain’s commitment to the Iran Nuclear Deal in the House of Commons on Wednesday.

He was supported by his Labour counterpart, Emily Thornberry, who attacked Mr Trump’s decision to break out of Barack Obama’s deal.

Donald Trump claimed his actions made nuclear war less likely.

He said: “If I allowed this deal to stand, there would soon be a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.”

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has argued that his country can seek to upscale their nuclear arsenal “without limit” now.

Middle East analyst James Dorsey said “the core of Iran’s defence policy” is its ballistic missile programme – and they will not compromise.

“It’s about Iran, not about finding a solution.”
