Wayne Rooney has joined DC United after leaving Everton

Rooney spent one season back at Everton after returning to Goodison Park from Manchester United.

But he’s now left again and moved to the States as the 32-year-old looks to prolong his career.

Rooney left United after failing to keep hold of a starting place under Jose Mourinho.

England’s record goalscorer made 31 Premier League appearances for Everton last season, though he knows his playing opportunities would have reduced this coming season.

“Obviously at Manchester United that [playing] wasn’t happening as much as I would have liked and I quite easily could have stayed there with two years left on my contract and picked up the wages and been happy with that and that’s it,” Rooney told ESPN.

“But I wanted to play, went back to Everton and had a year there, then as I’ve said before, Everton made it clear towards the end of the season that they’d be happy for me to leave.

“For whatever reason, I still don’t know. I felt I was doing okay, I was top goal scorer [despite] playing most of the season from midfield.

“But that’s football. And that gave me a decision to make, and I made this decision.”

Rooney is making the move to the MLS with his debut set to come against Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday.

He’s not the first English player to make the trip across the Atlantic with David Beckham, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Ashley Cole also having played in the MLS.

At 32, Rooney is the same age as Beckham and younger than the ever three when they made the move but the striker is certain this isn’t the end of his career.

“I think, 32, obviously it’s getting on a bit, but it’s not 35, 36,” he said.

“I think it’s the right time for me to come here and have an impact on this league, to show the league the respect it deserves.

“I didn’t want to come over here at 35, 36 and not be able to do it, physically or whatever, so I think it’s the right time and it’s a good change for me and my family.”
