That’s the verdict of Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas, who claims Jesse Lingard deserves the accolade this year instead.

David De Gea has enjoyed another strong season between the sticks, turning in a number of top performances including a staggering showing at Arsenal in December.

And he capped off the 2017/18 campaign by securing the Premier League Golden Glove for the first time in his career with last week’s clean sheet against West Ham.

De Gea’s performances were recognised last month when he was awarded United’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award for the fourth time in five years.

Nicholas says he would give United’s player of the season award to one of De Gea’s team-mates instead though.

"I know David De Gea got it from the club but I hate to give it to goalkeepers unless they've been unbelievable for a lesser team," Nicholas told Sky Sports.

"Yes, he's the best goalkeeper in the world, but I would actually give it to Jesse Lingard because he scores goals and brings entertainment to an otherwise bland team."

Lingard was named as one of the midfielders in Gareth Southgate’s England World Cup squad on Wednesday.

And Nicholas has given his endorsement for the 25-year-old to be in the starting line-up against Tunisia on June 18.

"He's now a certainty to start in the World Cup for me," Nicholas added.

Lingard further endeared himself to the Old Trafford faithful last month when he revealed he rejected United’s rivals Liverpool.

"One day I was at Liverpool and someone didn’t pass the ball to me and I thought, 'I can’t be doing this,'" he revealed.

"I walked out and said to my grandad, 'Let’s stay at United instead'. I swear that was the reason.

"I felt more comfortable at United. I knew I had to make a choice. Grandad looked after me. He still comes now and then to support me and he still texts me before games."
