Reigns' cousin and WWE legend Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson inspired millions across the world when he revealed how he overcame a rough childhood and achieved phenomenal success in professional wrestling and Hollywood.

During his teenage years, The Rock sunk into deep depression after witnessing his mother Ata attempting suicide by walking into oncoming traffic on Interstate 65 in Nashville shortly after they were evicted from their flat.

Johnson also endured severe financial problems as he one day realised he only had $7 to his name and his hopes of having a career in American football were shattered by injury.

Nevertheless, The People's Champion managed to beat the odds and become one of the greatest wrestlers of all time before joining the Hollywood elite.

I had no money, I had no job, I had very little direction but I had a very huge purpose

Reigns is being considered as the next face of the WWE to take over after John Cena retires but also had to overcome various obstacles to realise this dream.

Just like The Rock, he also aspired to become a football star but after two short stints with the Minnesota Vikings and Jacksonville Jaguars, followed by one year in the CFL with the Edmonton Eskimos, the WWE star had to retire at a young age due to medical reasons.

The then 23-year-old found himself penniless, jobless and with no direction at a very crucial time when he was expecting his first child.

He told Express Sport: "Probably 15 years of my life playing college football on a scholarship, I was having a daughter at the time. I had no money, I had no job, I had very little direction but I had a very huge purpose at that point and that was to take care and provide for my family which has grown ever since.

"I'm not going to go too deep into my backstory and the struggles and the adversity I had, but essentially I was ousted from football for a medical situation. It wasn't because I wasn't good enough. It just didn't work out for me. It wasn't supposed to be for me.

"I think like a lot of different people throughout this world I ran into a bunch of different similarities as far as adversity and stuff like that."

Reigns has been inspired by The Rock the same way as everyone around the globe as he admires the way he always comes out on top regardless of the obstacles that were thrown against him.

The three-time world champion also applauds him for paving the way to other sports entertainers to pursue other career avenues outside of professional wrestling.

He added: "I think The Rock has inspired me just like everybody.

"I'm not a hater, I like to see people do good. People want to see others do good, but not that good.

"And he's a great example, someone who continues to shatter the ceiling. It doesn't matter the obstacle or what kind of situation that he's put in and he seems to come out on top every different avenue that he drives in so kudos to him in just being the hero and inspiration that he is.

"Sports entertainers can do a little bit of everything. I think he's done that for his fans all over the world and he continues to do that."

The two WWE heroes are not biological cousins but still share a special family bond through their Samoan heritage.

Their relation occurred as a result of Reverend Amituana’i Anoa’i, Reigns’ grandfather, declaring Peter Maivia, The Rock’s grandfather, as his blood brother - something that holds deep meaning within Samoan culture.
