Zlatan Ibrahimovic is not competing at the World Cup with Sweden
England and Sweden meet at the Samara Arena in Russia with the stakes incredibly high – a place in the World Cup semi-finals.
But away from the pitch, two giants of the game are also raising the stakes.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who won 116 caps for Sweden, decided to challenge former England captain Beckham to a bet on the game.
The Swede posted on Instagram: “Yo @davidbeckham if @England wins I buy you dinner where ever you want in the world, but if Sweden wins you buy me what ever I want from @IKEASverige ok?”
Zlatan Ibrahimovic called out David Beckham on Instagram
Beckham then replied: “If Sweden win I will personally take you to Ikea and buy you whatever you need for the new mansion in LA, but when England win I want you to come watch an England game at Wembley wearing an England shirt and enjoy fish and chips at half-time.”
And with social media as their witness, football fans will be making sure the loser carries out the bet in its entirety.
England boss Gareth Southgate, 47, has said England must “make the most” of their World Cup opportunity, but warned against under-estimating an “older, more experienced” Sweden.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David Beckham have a big bet on the outcome of England vs Sweden
“You have to enjoy the good moments, but I am a long way from perfect, there are plenty of mistakes we have made while we have been here and we will make moving forward, so I think it is dangerous territory if we get carried away with things,” said Southgate.
He added: ”Although our team will be better in two years with more life experience, maybe the cards on injuries and things won’t fall as kindly and we won’t get this opportunity again.
“It’s dangerous if I start to get carried away, but I’m proud of the way we’re playing.”
