Zlatan Ibrahimovic has joked that Sweden could win the World Cup

Brazil, Spain and Germany are among the tournament favourites to lift the World Cup in Russia with Argentina and France also in the reckoning.

Ibrahimovic called time on his international career with Sweden before the tournament, but he will be taking in the action.

The 36-year-old refused to pick out one team that could go all the way.

When asked who his favourites are to clinch the trophy, Ibrahimovic told FIFA.com: “I think Brazil, Spain, Germany, obviously Sweden. Argentina also, even if they don’t want to speak about themselves as favourites: they are.

“I am sorry the US is not in the World Cup because that’s my new country where I live, and I would support them also.”

And when asked to explain how realistic Sweden’s hopes are, he added: “They beat some big nations to reach the World Cup, so let’s see.

“Everything is exciting and new. You never know what will happen. It’s all about the moment.

“Whoever is best in the moment is the one that will do well.”

Sweden open their World Cup campaign with a group game against South Korea on Monday (1pm UK time).
