Jon Favreau is in the process of re-doing the iconic film, with Billy Eichner now taking the role of Timon alongside Seth Rogen as Pumbaa.
In fact the only star from the animated classic to reprise their role will be James Earl Jones as Mufasa.
Speaking on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night, Lane revealed that Eichner reached out to him about taking the role – and he reacted brilliantly.
“So I get an email from Billy Eichner who’s going to play Timon,” he said. “Very sweet, he writes this lovely email, saying he’s going to be doing it, just letting me know and how to follow in my footsteps…
Nathan Lane had audiences in stitches last night as he discussed The Lion King
Lane shared his letter to Billy Eichner, who has replaced him
He joked that Timon and Pumbaa should marry
“He was very complimentary, very unlike Billy Eichner! And I was very touched, so I wrote him back.”
He added: “This is what I wrote back: ‘How dare you! What’s next, you and Ryan Gosling in The Birdcage? I’d name another of my successful films but I don’t have one.
“’Billy, when this was first announced I thought to myself, ‘this just goes to prove the old showbiz adage – everyone is replaceable except James Earl Jones. Hakuna f**king Matata.
“’However, now the gay rights have come so far, Timon can finally marry Pumbaa and live openly in the Serengeti. Believe me, once you’ve had Warthog, you never go back.’”
Timon was big comedy relief in the movie
Alfre Woodard will voice Sarabi, and John Kani will play Rafiki.
The Lion King is out on July 19, 2019.
